What is place value and why is it important?

Do you remember learning about place value in elementary school? It may have seemed like a simple concept at the time, but understanding it is crucial for future success in math. As a parent or teacher, you have the opportunity to lay a foundation for your child’s math education by teaching them place value in third grade. This concept not only enhances your child’s basic math skills, but also helps to develop their critical thinking abilities.

HOW DO I USE THIS PLACE VALUE RESOURCE?

This set of 5 Days of Place Value can be used so many ways! The questions were designed with third graders in mind. Some questions have the grid answer format to practice for state testing.

1.  MORNING WORK

One of the most important things in any classroom is establishing and maintaining a routine. This set helps solve that problem! Copy this set, three-hole punch and place in folders for each child. Each morning have them get out their folders and start to work. Have them work on all of the problems for maybe 15 minutes then check together. As you check the problems with the students, model how to solve each problem.

2.  WHOLE CLASS

Pass out one sheet to the class each day and work the problems together. Sometimes I pretend to make a common mistake to see if the students notice and to model how to correct the error.

3.  HOMEWORK

Assign one page a night or one page a week for math homework. It’s great to get parents involved.

4.  SMALL GROUP/TUTORING

This set is perfect print and use with small group or tutoring. You could use highlighters to highlight key words in the questions.

5.  QUICK ASSESSMENT

Need a quick assessment on place value? After you have taught place value in class, use one of these pages as a quick assessment of student learning.
